Fiesta Farewells

HLC announced today on its Facebook page that the Fiesta bud vase, carafe and relish/utility tray will be moved to "inactive availability" by the end of this year.  Fiesta bakeware items will also be available in only a limited range of colors.  Finally, CHOCOLATE will be dropped from the Fiesta line-up on March 1, 2012 (presumably to make room for the new Fiesta color to be announced at the housewares show in Chicago later that month).

New Fiesta Items Introduced at New York Tabletop Show

Fiesta Serveware
At this week's Tabletop Show in New York, NY, HLC introduced exciting new items to the Fiesta dinnerware line.  The 5 items currently available in the ceramic-handled Fiesta serveware line will now be available in all 15 Fiesta colors.  Based upon the photo posted on the HLC Facebook page, it looks like 4 more Fiesta serveware pieces may be in the works: a spatula, a pasta server, and a smaller serving fork and ladle.  We're excited to see the expansion of this Fiesta accessory line, which should be available in stores beginning on November 15, 2011.

Fiesta Napkin Holder
We're also excited to see the introduction of the new Fiesta square napkin holder.  Attendees at the 2010 HLCCA Conference in Nashville, TN will recall HLC's Dave Conley passing around a prototype of this piece during his presentation.  The square napkin holder--which also makes a handy utility tray--will be available in stores on February 2, 2012.

Love Among the Dishes

The East Liverpool (OH) Review reports today on romantic goings-on at the HLC Factory Outlet. Jim Wierwille proposed to his Fiesta-fan sweetheart, Jill Lowry, with the assistance of HLC Art Department and Outlet staff.

Jim worked behind the scenes with the Art Department to make a custom Marigold Fiesta plate reading "Jill: Will you marry me? Jim." Outlet staff then placed the special plate in the 75th anniversary Marigold display and waited for the happy couple to arrive.

After Jill said "Yes" (how could she say "No"?), HLC Vice President Liz McIlvain congratulated the couple and offered them four Fiesta place settings in any color they chose.

Laughlin Park and Hollywood's Golden Age

(Photo credit: http://www.exoticexcess.com/estates/estate-of-the-day-239-million-for-the-cecil-b-demille-estate-in-los-angeles-california/)
The same year that Homer, Sr., died (1913), Homer, Jr. subdivided Laughlin Park in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles.  Laughlin Park was home of many of the elite in the early days of Hollywood.  A centerpiece of the gated neighborhood is the former Cecil B. DeMille estate, which was listed for sale for $23.9 million in 2008.  It is still a very desirable address.

More Homer Laughlin (Jr.) in Los Angeles

In 1915, Homer Laughlin, Jr. built the Laughlin Theatre in downtown Long Beach, CA.  Designed by architect Irving Gill in a very streamlined version of his typical Spanish colonial style, the building was badly damaged in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake, and was eventually demolished.  It was located at the southwest corner of Pine Avenue and 4th Street.  Gill also designed a home for Homer, Jr., his wife and son (Homer III) in the fashionable West Adams neighborhood of Los Angeles in 1912. See Darlene Nossaman's article from Volume 4, No. 3 of The Dish (Spring 2002) for more information about Homer, Homer, Jr. and Homer III in Los Angeles.

"Like" the Homer Laughlin Building

Browsing on Facebook recently, we came across this Wikipedia post for the Homer Laughlin Building in downtown Los Angeles, CA.  Built by Homer Laughlin in 1896--having sold the Homer Laughlin China Company by that time to the Wells and Aaron families--the building is still in use today, and is home to the Grand Central Market.  Homer Laughlin (along with his son, Homer, Jr.) made something of a name for himself in Los Angeles real estate in the early 20th century, including a movie theatre in Long Beach and a gated subdivision (Laughlin Park) in Los Feliz.

Decorated Vintage Fiesta Chop Plate

A recent blog visitor has shared with us these photos of a decorated vintage ivory Fiesta chop plate. We're guessing that it's the 15-inch chop plate without the double foot (based upon the relative size of the plate to the Fiesta backstamp).  Over the Fiesta backstamp is a gold backstamp reading "Vogue Dinnerware Warranted 24K Gold."  Is anyone familiar with this dinnerware line or decoration?  If so, please let us know.

Rest in Peace, Becky Turner

Becky S. Turner
1954 - 2011
We are deeply saddened to report that Becky Turner passed away today in her sleep.  Becky had planned to attend this year's HLCCA conference in Pittsburgh, PA, but was admitted to the hospital at Vanderbilt University early last week.  Becky was a long-time member of HLCCA, where she served on the Board and was Treasurer until the early 2000s.  Becky was a knowledgeable and generous collector, with a particular passion for Harlequin dinnerware.  Becky had struggled with serious health issues for the past few years, but had recently completed a trip to France, and had attended her daughter Tori's graduation and her daughter Abbey's wedding.  She will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

So Long Until Next Year!

HLCCA Conference 2011 concluded this morning with the business meeting and a breakfast buffet.  Prelimimary plans were announced for next year's conference in Kansas City, MO, to be held from July 12-15, 2012.  The Top of WV Convention and Visitors Bureau also made a pitch for us to consider holding a future HLCCA conference at the Mountaineer Resort and Casino.  We wish everyone safe travel home!

The votes have all been tabulated and we're pleased to announce that Jeff Kolodey and Melicety Deatherage are the two newest members of the HLCCA Board of Directors.  Also re-elected were The Dish Editor David Schaefer, Vice President Kit Fox and Board Member Susan Tucker.  All newly-elected and re-elected Board Members will serve until 2013.  We thank all of the candidates and everyone who voted for their participation!

Congratulations, Candy Fagerlin!

Candy's article for Volume 13, No. 4 of The Dish won tonight's annual award for Best Article.  The article featured a re-creation of the famous 1936 Delineator ad of cobalt and ivory Fiesta photographed by Margaret Bourke-White.

Double Win for Ryan Goldner!

HLCCA member Ryan Goldner won both the Tablescape and Floral Arrangement competitions at this year's conference. The winners are selected by a popular vote of conference attendees. Congratulations, Ryan!

Spectacular Tablescape at Tonight's HLCCA Banquet

We were greeted with the spectacular sight of Marigold Fiesta on the tables at tonight's banquet.  Each attendee received a Marigold Fiesta embossed teapot ornament and a pair of Marigold Fiesta stick-handled --yes, you read that correctly, stick-handled -- demitasse cups and saucers, as well as an etched 75th anniversary wine glass.  During the table drawings later this evening, one lucky winner per table won a Marigold Fiesta soup tureen and another won a pair of Marigold Fiesta tripod candleholders.  We thank HLC for it's generosity and assistance with tonight's banquet!
